Danjeon Breathing for Immune System Support

For the better part of its existence, Danjeon Breathing was limited to fewer than 100 core wellness poses.  These core poses made it possible for this self-healing energy art to endure for centuries.

The Feel Better on Your Own Danjeon Breathing for Wellness system is based upon the Suseonjae style practiced in South Korea.

Unlike diaphragmatic breathing, such as the box breathing and cyclic sighing methods described on this site, Danjeon Breathing focuses on a region of the body known as the danjeon, as it is referred to in Korean, or what women commonly refer to as the womb.

Location of the Danjeon

While Danjeon Breathing oxygenates the body much the same way as other breathing techniques, it is the only one to focus on bringing fresh qi, vital energy, into the body for immune system support.

The goal of Danjeon Breathing is to rejuvenate the body’s qi, which is stored in the danjeon.  Here is another reason why Danjeon Breathing is unique.  It requires visualization.

Danjeon Breathing - Inhale
Danjeon Breathing - Exhale

With each Danjeon Breathing pose, as you inhale, you must visualize drawing qi from the top of your head, down through your body to the danjeon.  Then, as you exhale, you visualize the spent qi in danjeon being forced down through your hips and legs to the balls of your feet and out of your body.

Immune System Support

This self-healing energy was first developed centuries ago, for the benefit of Korean elites.  From the beginning, it focused on energizing the danjeon, which is located in the gut, where over 70% of the body’s immune system is situated.

The reason they wanted to energize their danjeon was that while these elites enjoyed the best of everything, they feared catching their death of cold because in those days, the leading causes of death were infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, and influenza.

These elites instructed their advisors to devise a method to enhance their immune systems, drawing on acupuncture concepts, with two key requirements.  The technique had to be non-invasive, and the elites could practice it without the need for a practitioner.

Comparisons to Yoga and Acupuncture

To help you understand why Danjeon Breathing is so effective, let’s compare it to acupuncture in Traditional Chinese Medicine and the chakra system of Indian yogic and spiritual traditions.

Chakra System - Crown and Root
Acupuncture Meridians

The chakra system describes seven main energy centers aligned along the spine, each believed to influence specific physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of a person’s well-being.

With Danjeon Breathing, fresh qi is drawn through the Crown (Sahasrara) chakra into the body and directed, through visualization, to the Root (Muladhara) chakra, which is also the same region of the body that Koreans refer to as the danjeon, where the body stores qi for distribution through the various energy channels.

In acupuncture, energy channels—known as meridians—are central to understanding how health and balance are maintained in the body.  These meridians are thought to be invisible pathways through which qi, or vital energy, flows, much like blood travels through vessels.

With Danjeon Breathing, the same meridian concept is used to distribute qi throughout the body, and most poses are performed to open the channels for optimal qi flow.

Danjeon Breathing is similar to acupuncture and yoga in that it is typically learned with the help of instructors and practitioners, which usually entails time and expense.   The same can be said for traditional Danjeon Breathing instruction, but here is where our system differs.

When designing this system, Master Roar Shephard selected 57 time-proven wellness poses that date back to the very inception of this self-healing energy art and organized them by their level of challenge.  Consequently, our comprehensive Danjeon Breathing system addresses the typical 90% concerns with a self-help system approach, allowing you to design your exercise plan to meet your needs completely on your own.

Courseware developer Marshall Masters then created a color-coded system for a unique rapid-access-to-knowledge design, addressing over 90 percent of the typical needs of first-time practitioners.  Consequently, the all-color Symptoms Handbook and DVDs are a color-coded, integrated system.

The Feel Better on Your Own System

Our complete Danjeon Breathing system includes a Welcome DVD; two standardized exercise program DVDs, three trainer reference DVDs, and an illustrated 192-page, 7.4” x 9.7” full-color Symptoms Handbook.

The heart of this self-paced home study solution is the full-color Symptoms Handbook, which is written to work in conjunction with the six copyable DVDs that comprise the complete system.

The Complete Feel Better on Your Own Danjeon Breathing Self-healing System

The first thing you will notice when using the table of contents and indices at the front of the Symptoms Handbook is that the entries are color-coded because all of the 57 poses in this system are organized into three main color-coded categories:

Low-impact (blue)

Universal (green)

 High-impact (red)

The Symptoms Index is organized by symptom and related poses, and is color-coded to allow you to select your poses based on your preferred challenge level.  The poses are cross-referenced as follows:

    • What you are feeling, such as being unhappy or a lack of vitality.
    • Physical complaints such as menstrual pains and being unable to sleep.
    • Organ-related issues, such as those affecting the liver, neck, and pelvis.

After this, come three other indices: Body Parts, Elements, and Exercise Stages, all of which are color-coded.  The result is that you can quickly identify the poses that will help you address your specific concerns.  Each pose is then cross-referenced and illustrated.
